03/10/2013 - College PREP - Indianapolis, IN Owen is a tall, athletic 1B with a strong lower half that will graduate in 2015. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 7.09 60 time. Feet are active as he works to square balls up and displays clean hands. He shows proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. He needs to play through balls more and present hands more out front to continue to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program and work on getting rid of the ball quicker to improve arm grade. At the plate, Young shows a balanced, rhythm setup and he loads up well. Hands are smooth / loose / quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered to all fields. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to get stride foot down sooner to work on time. With 2 years to further develop, Owen has abilities and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
