01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Read showed good skills behind the plate during his time at the UA Preseason All-America. He lowered his 60 time from 7.81 to 7.59, and again showed plus size and strength. Read has a quick exchange, and an accurate arm with life and carry. His footwork is quick behind the dish and he takes appropriate angles when blocking the baseball. If Read can work to gain more ground when receiving, and add more arm strength, an already solid C can become even better. Offensively, Read is a strong hitter with pop in his bat. His balance and bat speed are good, and with more use of his lower 1/2, hitting grades can further improve.

10/14/2009 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic - 2009 Read is a catcher with an outstanding body that is well suited for his position. Foot speed is a near average as he needs to get on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active working in line with his target, showing proper direction as transfer / exchange is quick and efficient as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times show a range of 2.00-2.20 as he displays near above average arm strength, showing life, carry, and accuracy. Receiving and blocking skills are near above average, showing as quality tools at the next level. He has an idea for calling pitches as he is tough, displaying quality leadership abilities. At the plate, Brown continues to shine displaying near above average abilities with above average power through a solid approach. Hands are quick and direct to the baseball, generating plus bat speed as he shows a solid feel for the barrel. He has strength is his swing with the baseball jumping off his bat as he was 1 for 4 with a 2B and 3 BB as he shows a solid eye at the event. Read has a ton of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his abilities behind and at the plate.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
