08/05/2010 - Vero Beach Pro Select Training and Competition - 2010 Rhett is a young (2014) catcher with a compact, strong frame that is well suited for his position. Feet are clean, working in line to his target showing proper direction through the throwing process. Transfer / exchange is consistent but needs to work on speeding up to get rid of ball quicker. Pop times show a range of 2.40-2.53 as he will benefit by getting on a long toss program to further develop more arm strength, lowering pop times. Receiving and blocking skills are currently below average, needing further development to be quality tools at the next level. Offensively, Howard shows a balanced approach with hands working short to the ball. Stance starts and stays open as he needs to square up. He makes consistent contact as he was 4 for 6 at the event. Power numbers will increase as he learns to utilize lower half more efficiently through the swing. With 4 years to further develop, Rhett has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
