Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

12/19/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #1 Mota continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and now projects best in the OF for the next level. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.60 runner. He utilizes his athletic feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls in the OF as he shows a solid release with carry on his throws. Offensively, Roman shows an aggressive approach with plus bat speed as he flashes gap power. He was 3 for 7 with a 3B at the event. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 79-80 mph as he works fast, getting ahead of hitters.

11/08/2009 - College PREP - Austin, TX Roman is a two-way player on the mound plus in the OF with a thin frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature, filling out. Foot speed is near average as he will benefit to get on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active but needs to be more aggressive in taking proper routes / angles to work in getting behind balls to play through with momentum to his target. Defensive abilities are near average with average arm strength in the OF as he must get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength, raising velocities. At the plate, Mota has slightly above average abilities with near above average power through a balanced approach. He has strength in his swing with baseball jumping off his bat as he displays extension through the ball but has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential at the plate with grades improving quickly with instruction and adjustments. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 78-79 mph with some late life. Breaking ball is best off speed pitch, displaying 10/4 shape and good spin. Changeup shows solid feel for on a flat plane. He throws a knuckleball thatis just average. Roman has abilities with a lot of room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
