12/27/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #2 Abey participated in Pirate City as both a SS and OF, and showed similar skills as he did 11/09. He is an athletic, rangy player with good instincts and play skills. Abey has good hands and feet at both positions and a quick exchange from glove to hand. He works well to get behind the baseball and delivers the ball accurately to the target. Abey has a good 1st step, but will need to add arm strength to improve at both positions. If Abey can work to field the baseball in a lower, more athletic fielding position, defensive grades could rise. At the plate, Abey is a well balanced hitter with good bat speed. His swing is short to long and he shows good barrel contact. Abey will need to incorporate his lower 1/2 into his swing and get his front foot down sooner for offensive numbers to further improve.

11/08/2009 - College PREP - Austin, TX Abey is a young two-way player at SS plus in the OF with a small frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and add muscle mass. Foot speed is average as he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active in coming to get the baseball but needs to be more aggressive in playing through with momentum to his target. He shows life in his body with a soft, sure hands but glove action is deep due to feet stopping in the fielding process as he displays average defensive abilities in the middle of the IF. In the OF, he takes proper routes and angles in tracking down balls but needs to work to get behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. He shows slightly above average defensive abilities in the OF. Arm strength is below average as he must get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength with carry on throws. At the plate, Lara has slightly above average abilities and power through a balanced approach. He shows life in his hands through a line drive type path but has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential at the plate with grades improving quickly with instruction and adjustments. With 2 years to further develop, Abey has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
