Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 2B/OFPosition Projection

06/24/2010 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 2 Billings continues to show improvements in his baseball abiliites. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.48 runner. He utilizes his feet well in his defensive play, displaying range. Offensively, Ryan was patient, showing good pitch selection as he worked the count. He is very coachable, willing to make adjustments to better himself.

11/05/2009 - Pirate City Select Training Billings continue to show improvements in his baseball abilities especially at the plate where hitting abilities are now slightly above average with near average power. Swing path is short, compact as he shows a feel for the barrel. He needs to work on staying through the baseball at contact, displaying extension, currently rolls out. Power potential is present and will improve quickly as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. Defensively, he shows a feel with the ability to play all 3 OF positions plus 2B in the IF.

07/28/2009 - College PREP - Portland, ME Ryan is a young two-way player at 2B and in the OF with a small, thin frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and add muscle mass. Foot speed is near average and he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active in working around balls to play through with momentum to target. Glove action is soft and sure, presented down and out front. He shows off his athletic abilities in his feeds and turns of the double play displaying slightly above average defensive abilities in the IF. In the OF, defensive abilities are average as he goes back well and plays through ground balls. He needs to work on taking better routes and angles in working to get behind balls to play through with momentum to target. Arm strength is average and he must get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength with carry. At the plate, Billings has average abilities with below average power. He sets up well and shows good pre pitch rhythm. He has some mechanical flaws are hindering him from reaching his full potential at the plate with grades improving with instruction and adjustments at the plate. With 2 years to further develop, Ryan has abilities with a lot of room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
