08/09/2010 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ Ryan showed similar skills at Team One Northeast as he did in previous workouts. He is a big, strong, Catcher with good skills. Defensively, Ryan holds a low target, has good flexion, and has a soft glove. He deadens the ball well on his chest when blocking and has good direction toward his target when throwing out runners. Ryan has a decent transfer and throws accurately to his target. Added arm strength will help Ryan improve defensively. At the plate, Ryan is a strong hitter with good bat speed and barrel accuracy. He has a short stroke, he can spray to all fields, and he makes decent use of his lower 1/2. Hitting can get better if Ryan can loosen his grip on the bat and improve his extension through the ball.

04/25/2010 - College PREP - Ashburn (DC), VA Ryan is a strong, athletic looking catcher with a good body type that is well suited for his position. Foot speed is a plus as indicated by his 7.21 60 time. He utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in working in line with his target on his throws. His throws are accurate, displaying carry through a quick arm action. Pop times show a range of 2.04-2.20 with a means of 2.10. Receiving and blocking skills are plus tools as well that will play at the next level. He shows off his athletic abilities through the blocking process as he is a wall behind the plate. Offensively, Johnston shows an aggressive approach as he attacks the baseball with his hands. Bat speed is a plus to and through the baseball at contact, as he shows strength in his swing with the baseball exploding off his bat. Power is best to the pull side but has future power potential to all fields. Ryan has the makings to be a special type player at the collegiate level both offensively and defensively and he will get a lot of looks from the college coaches.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
