01/18/2013 - 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Schalch has a solid strong build at 6-foot-0 and 207 pounds. He handled the bat very well at this event, both in BP and in game AB. He hit from a solid base, and utilized his core and lower half to generate bat speed. He stayed short and showed power to both gaps, has a knack for getting the good part of the barrel on the ball. He showed the ability to handle pitches in, and the ability to drive through pitches away. He is a talented offensive player. Defensively, his hands were solid and his throws carried across the infield. He tended to be a little late into fielding position, and didn't flow through the catch into the release cleanly. He is a capable defender at 3B, and has plenty of arm strength for the position. His bat appears to be enough to carry him at either corner infield position.

07/29/2012 - Under Armour Southwest Regional Tournament Schalch continues to show as a 3B that has the makings to be a special type player at the next level with his baseball abilities. Feet are quick / athletic as he attacks ground balls and plays through well with his body. Hands are soft / clean / sure as he makes all the plays. Throws are accurate with on line carry across the diamond. At the plate, Ryan shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed to and through the baseball, creating extension. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered. At the event, he was 4 for 7 with 7 BB as he is patient with a strong recognition of the strike zones.

04/22/2012 - College PREP - Stockton (Sacramento), CA Ryan is a big third baseman with an accurate arm. In the infield, he has direct footwork that gets him in a strong fielding position and has excellent life on his throws across the diamond. His defensive skills should continue to develop as he learns to create some pre-pitch rhythm and soften his hands. At the plate, he creates a consistent load and strong lower half that allows him to really attack the baseball. His offensive tools should continue to improve as he learns to stay direct to contact and get extended through the hitting zone. As a future 2013 graduate, Ryan has the opportunity to continue to develop his skills in preparation for the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
