07/15/2010 - College PREP - San Jose, CA Sam showed improvements in his skills during his last workout in Aptos, CA. Behind the plate, Sam lowered his pop times from 2.16 to 1.99. He blocks and receives the ball well and has athletic actions. He keeps his elbow inside his body and has okay footwork. Sam has soft hands, and in online to his target when throwing. If Sam can widen his base and not crop hop to throw, defensive numbers can get even better. At 3B, Sam has a soft glove and decent footwork. He makes plays on balls hit his way and throws accurately with strength across the diamond. Defensive numbers can improve with better body control and looser actions. Offensively, Sam has good balance and bat speed. He has quick hands and some pop in his bat. A softer stride, better load, and better use of his lower 1/2 will help offensive numbers rise.

06/17/2010 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 1 Sam participated in Omaha and played 3B, Catcher, and Pitcher during his time there. He currently projects best behind the plate and at 3B. Sam has a strong, athletic frame and has good baseball instincts. He receives the ball well, has good footwork, and he throws accurately to 2nd base. At 3B, Sam's glove works well and he makes plays on balls hit his way. He has a short / quick arm action, good field awareness, and he stays in front of ground balls. If Sam can add arm strength, and work to get on top of his throws, defensive grades can further improve. On the mound, Sam has good glove side lead and a loose arm. He pitches to contact and fields his position well. Help with off-speed pitches will help Sam's mound effectiveness further improve. Offensively, Sam has an athletic set-up, quick hands, and good bat speed. He is short to contact, has pop in his bat, and he gets good carry and back spin off the bat. If Sam can avoid rotating off the ball, and not allow his body to drift throughout his swing, solid offensive grades can become even better.

04/11/2010 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA Sam is a two-way player showing as a catcher and 3B with a mature, athletic looking frame that is well suited for his positions. Feet are light and active as he works in line, showing proper direction to his target. Pop times show a range of 2.10-2.30 with a means of 2.20 and will drop as he quickens his transfer exchange. Blocking and receiving skills are slightly above average, needing further development to be quality tools at the next level. At 3B, feet are active but needs to be more aggressive in coming to get, playing through ground balls with feet and hands. Throws are accurate but needs to work to get rid of the baseball quicker. Offensively is where Gerald shows best as he sits in well and attacks the baseball with his hands through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with baseball exploding off his bat when centered as he displays plus bat speed. Sam has a ton of potential as he will get looks from the collegiate coaches, especially with his abilities at the plate.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
