Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHPPosition Projection

06/06/2010 - Exclusive Filming Shoot - MD 1 Abbate continues to show his pitchability every time we see him. Has a tall lean body that has some projection and room for added muscle. Arm action, delivery, and control are all above average and consistent. Stays in-line with a great follow through. Has good tempo, separates on-time, and has good balance. He threw all three pitches for strikes with downward plane and some fade on FB and CH. His off speed pitches compliment his FB well. With his size we believe there is more velo to come once he adds a few pounds. Great kid who works hard and will be a nice addition to a college program.

12/27/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #2 Sean participated at the Pirate City Camp as both a RHP and 1B. He currently projects better on the mound, where he has good mound presence and pitchability. Sean works to get ahead of the hitters, mixes his pitches well, and throws strikes. He has good arm action on his breaking ball and he holds runners well. Sean has a tendency to open early. If he can work to stay closed, and use more legs in his delivery, we could see velocity improve. At 1B, Sean works well around the bag, stretches well, and fields the ball out front. He has a long, clean arm action, and delivers the ball accurately to the target. With more range, and quicker feet, Sean can improve defensively. At the plate, Sean has good hand-eye coordination and stays inside the baseball. He has a short, compact swing and can hit to all fields. With added strength and use of his lower 1/2, Sean can add power to his game.

08/23/2009 - College PREP - Farmingville (Long Island), NY Sean continues to show steady improvement with his overall baseball abilities, as shown by improved 60-time. On the mound, had good mechanics and showed great command of FB. Repeated his delivery each and every time. Took small rocker step which allowed him to get to balance point easily every time. Showed good direction to home plate and developed lower half explosion with proper hip rotation. Had decent arm action with FB and worked downhill. Showed some feel for a CH while knuckle drop had 11/5 break. Would like to see him throw more strikes with off-speed pitches. At the plate, showed level swing thru hitting zone which allowed him to hit balls to all fields. Had the ability to center ball as he had gap-to-gap power. Stayed balance throughout with decent lower half explosion.

12/27/2008 - Under Armour Recruiting Classic 2008 Abbate continues to show as a two way player on the mound and at 1B. He has improved most of his baseball abilities. Arm strength has improved as he topped out at 81 mph on the mound but does need to stay on a strict long toss program to aid in building more arm strength and raising velocities. Defensive abilities have also improved displaying a soft, sure glove action with an accurate arm. Foot speed is still below average and needs to get on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness to improve lateral movement and footwork around the bag. At the plate, hitting abilities and power numbers have improved. He loads well and displays proper mechanics through the swing. Bat speed will improve as more strength is developed. On the mound, Sean continues to shine displaying solid rhythm and tempo in his delivery. Delivery and arm action have improved raising his upside on the mound. As arm strength continues to improve, so will his stock on the mound. Sean is very coachable and willing to make adjustments to improve his play. With 2 years to further develop, Abbate has the makings to become a solid player.

08/24/2008 - College PREP - Farmingdale, NY Sean continues to show steady improvement, especially on the mound. He shows a good feel for all of his pitches and has improved his changeup. He does need to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength. Delivery is smooth, easy, and repeatable allowing his arm to work clean and easy away from his body. He does project best on the mound for the next level and with 3 years to continue to develop he will catch the eyes of the college coaches.

09/30/2007 - ACR-E-Maryland 10 Sean is a young athletic 1B/RHP that plays football. At the plate, showed a line-drive approach with a level path and the ability to use all fields. Once he squares up his feet, he will have the ability to use lower half better. Overall strength will also help with bat speed. On the mound, was aggressive in zone. Under control and balanced allowed him to stay back and explode. Would like to see him keep eyes on target and take momentum straight to HP and not 1B. This will also help with keeping front hip closed. Long toss will improve arm strength.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
