Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/1BPosition Projection

01/18/2013 - 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Stephen is a left handed swinging two-way player that also jumped on the mound and competed at the Pre-Season All-America. With the bat, he has good extension after making consistently hard contact with quick hands. He has gap-to-gap ability and a line-drive swing path. In the outfield, he gets good jumps, takes good routes/angles and has active feet. On the mound, he threw three pitches - all for strikes - with his 11/5 curve-ball having sharp action and proving to be his best off-speed. He showed great command over his breaking ball and it was effective when he could spot up his fastball early. In all, Stephen projects best in the outfield, but will compete if he is needed on the mound.

07/08/2012 - 2012 Team One West Showcase Cornona continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. He utilizes his quick / active feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. Actions are easy and he reads balls well off the bat, taking proper first steps as he has improved his defensive abilities in the OF. Throws display life, accuracy, and on line carry into his target. At the plate is where Stephen has improved the most, now showing outstanding hitting abilities with well above average power. He shows an athletic setup with rhythm and quick, loose hands that generate plus bat speed through the zone. Swing path is short / direct to the ball and he shows plus barrel accuracy with baseball exploding off his bat when centered. At the event he was 2 for 3 with 2 BB as he displays a solid eye.

07/09/2011 - Team One West 2011 Stephen is an average, athletic two-way player at 1B plus on the mound that will graduate in 2013. Foot speed is a near average as he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. At 1B, he shows good footwork around the bag and is a good receiver displaying good hands. Throws are accurate but he will benefit by getting on a long toss program to aid in building more arm strength plus raising velocities. Offensively, Corona shows a balanced approach and loose hands. He has strength in his swing with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. At the event, he was 2 for 4 with 2 2B. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 78-80 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball is a quality pitch with tight spin and late breaking action. He attacks hitters throwing strikes with all his pitches and can be effectively wild. With 2 years to further develop, Stephen has potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to develop.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
