06/06/2010 - College PREP - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Stephen is a two-way player on the mound plus at 1B with an athletic looking body that is well suited for both his positions. Foot speed is solid as indicated by his 7.37 60 time as he utilizes his feet well in coming to get the baseball but needs to play through more. Glove action is presented down and out front showing soft, clean hands. Throws are accurate but he will benefit by getting on a long toss program. Offensively, Mahnken shows a balanced approach as he loads well allowing his hands to attack the baseball. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed as he shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. He needs to work on keeping two hands on the bat through contact. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 77-78 with glove side run. Change up is a quality pitch showing a solid feel for with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 2/7 shape with tight spin and 2 plane break. He attacks hitters as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stephen has an upside on the mound and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches, especially if arm strength continues to improve.
