Official Scouting Report

10/16/2019 - Arizona Freshman Fall Classic Steven continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. Behind the plate, pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.38 with accuracy and carry (80 mph velocity) on his throws. Hands are soft / sure and he sticks balls in the zone. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process, centering ball well out front. At the plate, he continues to shine through a squared setup. Hands are quick and work to and through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable as he shows good tempo through a strong balance point, allowing his arm action to work quick and free to the plate. Arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 76 mph. Fastball shows a range of 73-76 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

12/27/2018 - 2018 Inaugural West Coast Winter Classic - La Verne, CA Steven is a coachable RHP/C prospect who worked hard on his skills during his time at the West Coast Winter Classic. On the mound, Steven starts with a small rock step and gathers to a balance point over the rubber. He stays inline towards the plate and finishes with his chest over his front knee. Steven shows a two pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 70mph with cutting action. Breaking ball sits from 56-59mph with 11-5 break. In the field, Steven shows quick footwork and moves to block well. He sits in an athletic stance and receives with sure hands. He makes a quick exchange and gains momentum well on his throws to 2B, keeping them accurate with carry through the bag. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an open stance and takes a controlled stride. He gets into a simple load and remains centered with his lower half. He takes a smooth swing with decent bat speed, leading to loud contact and good power. With four more years to develop, Steven has the time and potential to further progress his skills on the field.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
