Official Scouting Report

09/13/2009 - College PREP - Azusa, CA Steven continues to show improvement with his baseball abilities, as shown by improved hitting grade. At the plate, threw the barrel at ball as he attacked it with excellent bat speed. Had the ability to hit ball to all fields with excellent power. Occasionally hips leak forward which didn't allow for proper lower half explosion. He was able to stay balanced throughout swing. At SS, excellent athletic actions allowed for above average range. Came from the right to field ball out front with soft hands as he made accurate throws. Would like to see him play thru ball more aggressively since he relies too much on his excellent arm. On the mound, had good balance and rhythm as he got to his balance point each time. Repeated his delivery which allowed for excellent command. Loose quick arm action allowed for good extension thru ball as he top at 88mph. As he stayed closed, had good direction and momentum to home plate. Demonstrated good off speed pitches that complement his FB.

07/07/2009 - Cape Cod Training 2009 - Week 1 Steven has blossomed into a 2-way baseball player at the next level. Potential is unlimited while velocity now tops out at 91 mph and he improved every facet of his game since the last time we saw him. At 2B, made everything look easy because he had outstanding actions. Showed good lateral movement with ability to field out front. Had excellent hands with ability to make it look smooth. Throws had good carry and life as they were accurate to each base. At the plate, bat speed was above average. Good hand-eye coordination allowed him to hit balls to all fields. Performed much better from the right side. On the mound, showed a great understanding on how to pitch. Changed speeds effectively and worked both sides of the plate with good command. FB had arm side run with good life at the end. CB is an above-average strikeout pitch. Worked down in the zone with all pitches.

12/27/2008 - Under Armour Recruiting Classic 2008 Steven is a young two way player at 2B and on the mound with a lean, athletic looking body that does show projection as it continues to physically mature. Currently, he does project best in the infield where he shows off his athletic ability. Foot speed is solid average and he utilizes his quick feet well through the fielding and throwing process. Footwork and glove work are clean, easy, and mature. He has a great feel with his defensive abilities showing near above average. Fielding grades will improve as he learns to be more aggressive in coming to get and playing through ground balls with his feet and hands. Arm strength is near above average showing life, carry, with accuracy on his throws. At the plate, Pallares has near above average ability and power. He shows good balance and displays a line drive swing path with solid extension at contact. He gets to a strong launch position and has an idea at the plate. Bat speed must improve with power numbers improving as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. On the mound, abilities are slightly average and would like to see him concentrate his work in the infield and at the plate. He has an upside and plays the game with consistency and energy. With 2 years to further develop, Steven has the makings to be a solid collegiate player.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
