Official Scouting Report

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 In addition to showing improved tools at this event, Tim also proved that he could put his abilities into play during games. He really showed as a versatile and capable player nearly across the board. He did everything from stealing bases, to throwing out would be base stealers, to striking out hitters on the mound. His overall approach was aggressive, which allowed him to take advantage of his 6.94 speed, his sub 1.90 release times (low of 1.86, down from 2.00 last time), and his 85 mph fastball (jumped top end from 84 mph last time). This combination is rare, and even more rare for a catcher to have such life in his body. Even more exciting is the fact that he is just a 2012 graduate, and has a large and sturdy frame to mature into. He has very good upside potential both on the mound and behind the plate. At this event, his biggest area for improvement appeared to be his swing mechanics. Needs to work to stay closed better with his front side, and needs to work to shorten his route to contact, the combination will help him reach a stronger contact position, and will allow him to better extend through contact. Overall, a naturally talented "baseball player" with tools and life in his body, a rare combination, and one that will make him a close follow over the next couple of years.

08/30/2009 - College PREP - Yorktown, VA Tim is a young, 2012 graduate that shows as a three-way player on the mound, in the OF, plus behind the plate with a plus body and frame that is well suited for his positions. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.10 60 time. He utilizes his quick athletic feet well in taking proper routes and angles to track down balls in the OF. He needs to get behind balls more to play through with momentum to target but has a solid idea displaying near above average defensive abilities in the OF. Behind the plate may be where Kelly is suited best. He shows a solid setup with his feet working in line to his target showing plus direction. Hands and feet work well together through the catch and throw process in getting rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times are in the 2.00-2.10 range. Receiving skills are above average with solid average blocking skills. Arm strength is well above average as he displays life, carry, and accuracy on his throws. At the plate, Kelly continues to shine displaying a well above average abilities with above average power through an aggressive approach. Hands are quick and direct, generating plus bat speed through a level swing path. He displays strength in his swing with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 82-84 mph on a downhill plane that creates tough angles on hitters. Off speed pitches are slightly above average and need further development to be quality pitches at the next level. With 3 years to further develop, Tim has the makings to be a special type player at the next level. Currently, he projects best behind the plate.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
