Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

10/06/2012 - 2012 Team One Texas Showcase Smith showed as a two-way player at 3B and on the mound for the first time. Currently, he projects best at 3B for the next level. Feet are active as he attacks ground balls and squares up well, displaying soft / clean / sure hands as he makes the plays. He gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy on his throws. At the plate, Tyler shows an athletic setup and solid approach. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 71-76 mph with glove side run. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with big, gradual break. Changeup is his best off speed pitch, showing a solid feel for with late sink. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will rise as more arm strength is gained.

07/18/2011 - College PREP - Carrollton (DFW), TX Tyler is a big, tall and solid third baseman that will graduate in 2013. At the plate he showed an athletic stance, solid load, short stride and balance throughout his swing. He made great use of his lower body, had fast bat speed and was on plane with his swing. At times the ball would get too deep and jam him but when the front foot was down early - good things happened. Defensively he shows active feet, range to both sides and was aggressive to the ball. He made consistent throws with life to his target. A few things to work on are having a quicker release, having softer feet and following his throw to help with accuracy. Tyler is young and with a few improvements, will become a solid prospect at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
