Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 2B/3BPosition Projection

06/20/2010 - College PREP - Lakewood (Denver), CO Zach showed improvements in his game during his most recent workout in Lakewood, CO. He improved his radar velocity from 71 to 75 MPH, and lowered his home to 1st time from 4.72 to 4.58. In the INF, Zach is light on his feet and has soft hands. He fields the ball in good rhythm, has a nice exchange, and he throws accurately across the diamond. Defensive abilities can improve if Zach can improve his lateral movements and field the ball a little further out in front of his body. Offensively, Zach improved his power grade from 48 to 50, while showing good bat speed, and barrel accuracy. He has a strong base, fields in good rhythm, and has a good bat path. Better barrel accuracy should help hitting and power grades continue to rise.

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Zach is a young, strong, athletic, middle INF that will graduate in 2011. Defensively, Zach has a good base, plays low to the ground, and is a hustler. His hands and feet work well, he has a quick exchange, and he is a smooth fielder. Zach's arm grade improved from 42 to 45, and with a little softer hands, Zach can continue to improve. Offensively, Zach has a balanced, quiet approach. He has a simple swing, good hand-eye coordination, and can square the ball up well on the barrel of the bat. Hitting can further improve with better tracking of the baseball, a more proper load, and more use of his lower 1/2.

10/21/2009 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic - 2009 Zach continues to show steady improvement with his baseball abilities. In the INF, kept his glove down in a good ready position as he had good reaction on balls off bat. Played thru ball aggressively and made accurate throws to each base. Demonstrate quick release on throws and DP turns. Stringent long toss program will help improve velocity and create fluid arm action. At the plate, stayed back well which allowed for good use of lower half. Had an opposite field swing which gave him the ability to hit balls to all fields. Demonstrated direct hand path to hitting zone which created decent bat speed. Had gap power and will create more with good extension thru ball. Was very aggressive on the base paths.

06/28/2009 - College PREP - Lakewood (Denver), CO Zach continues to improve his baseball skills. He improved his 60-time, velocity, fielding grade, and power grade while at this event. At the plate, had a balanced approach with the ability to track the ball. Produced lots of line drives with pull-side pop. Sits in well on ball inside with extension thru ball. When he keeps his hands inside ball consistently, he has ability to use all fields and not fly open with front side. Still shows lots of potential with the bat. In the INF, is a very polished defensive player at 2B and 3B. Had active feet throughout the fielding process. His feet allow him to take proper angles to ball and was not afraid to dive and get dirty. He presented well and played thru ball aggressively while fielding ball out front with soft hands. Currently arm strength showed best at 2B but a stringent long toss program will help improve velocity. He was athletic and smooth while fielding balls at 2B and 3B.

09/14/2008 - College PREP - Parker, CO Zach is a very young, 2011 graduate, two way player on the mound and at 3B. Currently, he projects best at 3B where he has solid abilities. He has a solid average body that does show projection as it continues to physically mature. Arm strength is slightly average and he needs to get on a strict long toss program to aid in building more arm strength. Arm slot is over the top and does display some carry across the diamond. Glove action is soft, sure, and presents down and out. He does need to utilize his feet more in coming to get the baseball, playing through with momentum to target. Backhand is stiff as he jabs at the baseball. At the plate, English has slightly average ability with average power. He shows a quiet set up and maintains solid balance throughout the swing. Flashes bat speed and take his hands directly to the baseball. Does not keep the barrel in the zone very long, rolls in and out at the point of contact; needs to stay through the baseball more at contact with hands. With minimal adjustments, hitting grades should rise quickly. On the mound, abilities are near to below average. He is young but would like to see him concentrate his work with his abilities in the infield and at the plate. With 3 years to further develop, Zach should develop into a solid player by the end of his senior year.

07/27/2008 - New York Pro Weekly Training English ran 7.57 in the 60-yard dash, an improvement from the 7.76 we saw before. At the plate, he showed a quiet and controlled approach. He also showed barrel accuracy and bat speed, along with good balance. Defensively, he stayed down with the ball and showed good hands and body control. On the mound, his delivery was easy and solid except for a slight tendency to drift forward with his hips. His 2 seamer had good movement, and his curve had good action on a 12-6 shape. Overall, a fundamentally sound young player with potential to develop further as he gains strength and improves his overall speed and quickness.

11/09/2007 - Dodgertown Select Training (Commuter) English showed good overall defensive actions, and a sound overall approach with the glove. At the plate, he made solid contact and showed good bat speed for the most part. He worked hard, and took instruction well - had the aptitude to learn and make adjustments. On the mound, his fastball was between 65 and 74. He had good balance through most of his delivery, and stayed under control well. Can work to maintain better direction from landing through finish, and can quicken his tempo a bit as well. Ran 7.76 in the 60-yard dash.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
