Official Scouting Report

  • 3BPosition Projection

06/22/2010 - College PREP - Houston, TX Zach showed a couple improvements in his game during his workout in Houston, TX. He lowered his 60 time from 7.48 to 7.41 and improved his radar velocity from 75 to 79 MPH. Zach is a lean INF with good footwork and very good hands. He fields the ball fluidly, flashes a soft glove, and has a smooth transition when throwing. Better angles to the ball will only help Zach improve in the INF. Offensively, Zach has very good balance and he stays inside the baseball well. He has good bat speed and barrel accuracy, and he can hit the ball to the opposite field. Zach hits the top 1/2 of the ball, and if he can let it travel deeper, and work on his load, we could see a spike in offensive tool grades.

06/19/2009 - USA Baseball 16U Championships (FL) - 2009 Zach continues to show steady improvement in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he cut a half second of his 60 time, now a 7.48 runner. Feet are active and aggressive in taking proper angles in getting around balls to play through with momentum to his target, showing a low to high approach. He shows proper foot work in his feeds and turns of the double play. Arm strength is solid average and needs to get on a strict long toss program to further aid in developing more arm strength. At the plate, hitting abilities have improved now showing above average abilities. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. He shows his best power to the pull side. Base running is a plus as he is a smart aggressive runner. Jacobs is a solid team player with a positive attitude. With 2 years to further develop, Zach will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he continues to develop.

02/08/2009 - College PREP - Houston, TX Zach is a young 3B with an average, thin frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Foot speed is below average and he needs to get on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Defensive abilities are outstanding as he shows a low approach and utilizes his feet well in coming to get and playing through ground balls. Backhand is solid and he is not afraid to use it. Glove action is soft, clean and sure in making all the plays. Hands and feet work well together in his defensive play. Arm strength is solid average showing some carry but needs to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength. At the plate, Jacobs has solid average ability and power. He shows a square stance with hands working well through the zone, generating bat speed. Swing path is level and utilizes all fields. He has strength in his swing and shows a solid feel for the barrel, displaying pop. With 2 years to further develop, Zach has the makings to be a special player at the collegiate level if he continues to develop.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
