11/18/2012 - College PREP - Houston, TX Zach is tall, athletic C/RHP that will graduate in 2014. Currently, he projects slightly better on the mound for the next level. Foot speed is solid as indicated by his 7.29 60 time. Feet are quick / athletic as he works in line through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Throws display life, accuracy, and on line carry to his target. Pop times show a range of 2.21-2.43. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, Vern shows an athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path as he makes consistent, hard contact, mainly to the pull side. He works to keep hands inside the ball to utilizing all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. On the mound, Delivery is sound / repeatable through a strong balance point, allowing his arm action to work long / loose to the plate through a 3/4 arm slot. Fastball shows a range of 83- 85 mph on a slight downhill plane. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with early break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run / sink. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. With 2 years to further develop, Zach has potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
