01/15/2010 - Vero Beach Spring Training & Competition - 2010 Chavarria improved his fastball velocity by three miles per hour, his top end fastball moved from 63 to 66. He did a good job of pitching to contact, allowing him to stay in innings. Showed better consistency and control from the stretch, but needs to develop delivery from the windup as well. Can simplify his glove / hand unit prior to break of hands, and needs to lengthen stride towards the plate to help him use his legs more. Also can work to keep his front side closed and his shoulders level. Defensively, he did a good job of staying in front of ground balls. Can work to watch the ball all the way into his glove, and needs to get his elbow up on throws to help strengthen throws. At the plate, he showed flashes of some bat speed. Much like on the mound, he needs to work on keeping his head and front shoulder closed longer. Physical maturity and improvements in strength and flexibility will help him greatly, he is a young player with plenty of time to develop his skills.
