12/27/2012 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament Zach is a hard worker who showed leadership behind the plate. He took charge on the field and was a vocal leader, calling a great game. He shows active footwork and works to get around balls in the dirt, centering them off of his chest. His receiving and blocking skills continue to show as above average and they will work at the next level. As a hitter, Young has an aggressive approach and puts the ball in play. He remains balanced and squares up the ball, hitting line-drives. For just making a recent transition to catcher, Zach has impressed us with his abilities the last couple of times we have seen him. He will be a great addition to a college program, especially because of the amount of growth he will be able make as a catcher as he continues to learn the position. Zach is a player to keep an eye on this spring during his senior year.

07/09/2012 - College PREP - Cleveland, OH It had been about a year since we last saw Zach, and he impressed us with his defensive abilities as a catcher. Feet are active as he gains ground and works in line through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times show a range of 1.93-2.10 with an average of 2.02. He will control the running game with his feet / arm. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At SS, feet are active as he works to square up to balls and display clean hands. For defensive grades to continue to improve, he needs to attack ground balls more, improve foot speed, and present hands more out front. At the plate, Young shows a balanced approach and solid setup. He tracks the ball well but needs to work to keep hands inside the ball and use his lower half more to improve hitting / power grades. We feel as though his best potential at the next level will be behind the plate.

07/24/2011 - Cape Cod Pro Select Training - July 24-28, 2011 Young continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities as he improved across the board up in Cape Cod. Defensively, he shows active feet with a low approach as he presents his hands out front. He shows off his athletic abilities on slow roller plays with hands / feet working well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. He has a clean and quick exchange. Throws show accuracy and carry across the diamond with improved arm strength as well. He can improve by playing lower, always playing through the ball with aggressive actions, and by avoiding his glove tap. Offensively, Zach has improved hitting grades with slightly above average power. He tracks the ball well and works hands through a quick, short path to the ball ending with a clean finish. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. He is a hard worker and coachable player who should continue to show improvements as well.

04/17/2011 - College PREP - Adrian (Detroit), MI Zach is a young two way player that will graduate in 2013. At shortstop he shows a quick exchange and he makes good feeds on the double plays. He will need to work on playing the ball in the center or glove side of the body, playing on the balls of his feet, and having a lower approach to get the glove out front more. Increasing arm strength will also be important for him. He shows efficient footwork as an infielder and also posted a good 60 yard dash time for his age of 7.47. Behind the plate he is in line to his target, gains ground to second on throws and shows above average actions with his blocking, especially in taking good angles. As a catcher he needs to work on his footwork which will help him throw with a cleaner exchange. At the plate he shows a tall setup with a short stride and good balance throughout the swing. Areas to improve are by getting a better load, more pre-pitch rhythm to relax the hands a bit and leveling out the swing for more consistent contact. Only a sophomore now, he has time to make these adjustments with hard work and proper instruction.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
