Official Scouting Report

  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

06/18/2010 - USA Baseball 16U Championships (FL) - 2010 Lavery continues to shine with his baseball abilities, especially on the mound where he topped out at 89 mph through an effortless arm action. Fastball showed a range of 83-89 mph with solid arm side run. Changeup is his best off speed pitch displaying as a quality pitch that will get outs at the next level. Breaking ball flashed potential as being a quality pitch. He attacks hitters, changing speeds well as he displays a solid mound presence. He threw a CG, giving up one run while striking out 9 as he has a plus upside. Defensively, foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 6.91 runner. He utilizes is foot speed well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls, displaying range. Offensively, Zach shows a simple approach as he uses all fields by working to keep hands inside the ball. He flashes pop with baseball jumping off his bat when centered and he will take the extra base with his foot speed, showing aggressive on the bases.

12/27/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #2 Zach participated in Pirate City at both positions and currently projects best on the mound. He is a long, lean athlete with good mound presence and excellent pitchability. Zach is a balanced pitcher that throws strikes with command. He has a good idea on the mound, works with good tempo, and pitches to contact. Zach can further improve by working to keep his front side closed. In the OF, Zach has good hands, feet, and takes good routes to the baseball. His arm is long, loose, and his throws live and carry to them. As Zach continues to grow and mature, added strength alone should improve his skills. Offensively, Zach has good balance and bat speed. He has quick hands and a level swing path. If Zach can work to get his front foot down sooner, and shorten his swing, offensive numbers could further improve.

08/16/2009 - College PREP - Gaffney, SC Zach is a young, 2012 graduate that shows as a two-way player on the mound and in the OF with a lanky, thin frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Currently, he projects best on the mound. Delivery is near above average as he shows sound mechanics as he works in line, eyes on target, and has solid glove side lead. He shows loose actions allowing his arm to work free and quickly to the plate. Arm strength is above average as indicated by his top velocity of 85 mph with some arm side run. Changeup is best off speed pitch showing above average with a solid feel for and arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with tight spin and gradual break. He attacks hitters as he throws strikes and maintains arm speed with all his pitches. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.09 60 time. Feet are active and aggressive in taking proper routes and angles in tracking down balls in the OF. He needs work to get behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. At the plate, Lavery has slightly above average abilities with near above average power through an aggressive approach. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. Swing path gets long due to an arm bar created in the load. He needs to work on staying closed on the front side and work to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. With 3 years to further develop, Zach has the makings to be a special type player at the next level as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
